International Day of Forests - Our Bond With Trees

International Day of Forests - Our Bond With Trees

14 Feb 2024

Another International Day of Forests is approaching, and it seems more urgent than ever that we stop deforestation. The lungs of the planet are disappearing at a fast rate, taking away oxygen, animals, plants, water, and shade with them. It is not too late to wake up, and start making better choices. Our choices have direct consequences on the forests, and the sooner we realize this, the sooner we can react to protect them. This celebration is a call for every individual, business, NGO, and country to aid reforestation.

This article explores the main causes of deforestation, history of the International Day of Forests and all the ways in which we can help.

History of the International Day of Forests

The idea of celebrating forests and raising awareness of their importance goes back to November 1971. During the Food and Agriculture Organization Conference, March 21st was elected World Forestry Day. But, it was not until November 28, 2012, that the United Nations General Assembly declared March 21st as the International Day of Forests.

This date has been celebrated each year since 2013 through various campaigns with the sole aim of protecting rainforests throughout the world. Not only businesses and individuals but also countries are encouraged to organize campaigns on each level to promote forest health. The best way to celebrate the International Day of Forests is by planting a tree.

How do we help?

We know how important forests are for our planet, and we recognize the need to do everything to save them. This is why we have partnered with the WeForest organization to contribute to reforestation efforts. For every purchase from our 'shop by purpose - plant a tree' collection, which includes multi-charging cables made from recycled materials, eco-friendly phone wallets and more, we will donate a tree.

Our main goal is to plant 10,000 trees, and together with wonderful people from WeForest and together with you, we will succeed. We want our products to tell a story about preserving the planet and making it less polluted. United, we can achieve any goal, especially as important and as noble as this one.

What is WeForest?

WeForest is an organization that helps reforestation, with three different aspects, People, Nature, and Climate. So far, starting from 2009, they have planted 82 million trees (and their goal is to plant 100 million trees by the year 2025). Also, they have 52,000 hectares under restoration and conservation at the moment. Their actions have improved the lives of 70,000 families around the world. Luckily, they don`t plan to stop and we are proud to call them our partners.

They have 20 Forest and Landscape Restoration programs undergoing in Asia, Africa, and South America. We can say that they are regrowing the lungs of the Earth.

Bamboo cutlery and straws

Bamboo cutlery is everything you need when you go camping or have a picnic. You can also use it when eating takeaway food outside. In this way, you will reduce the usage of single-use plastic cutlery that just pollutes the environment. The bamboo cutlery is reusable, and most importantly is it dishwasher-friendly.

The naturally antibacterial bamboo cutlery set consists of a fork, spoon, and a knife, and is great both for adults and kids. It is lightweight, so it will never be a burden to you when you head outside to have a fantastic day in nature. Of course, it comes in stone paper packaging and is wrapped with natural lace.

Reusable Alternative to Plastic Straws - Wheat Straws
Wheat Straws in a Glass

Bamboo straws are an excellent replacement for plastic straws. Instead of buying the greatest hazard to marine life, try these antibacterial, 100% compostable straws that can last you for years. Choose bamboo straws or 100-pack wheat straws for birthday celebrations or for drinking healthy, green smoothies in the morning.

When you want to throw them away, remember that you can still use them as a flower stick, or for different arts and crafts projects. These straws will last you for a long time as they are reusable, and most importantly you can even compost them at the comfort of your home.

Stone paper notebook

Imagine writing on a perfect piece of paper that is not actually paper. Up until recently, this was unimaginable, as trees have been used in paper production for thousands of years. However, using limestone to produce stone paper has been a game changer, and plays a vital role in protecting forests from deforestation.

Made from locally sourced limestone, which is an abundant byproduct in mines, the stone paper notebook is the future of paper-like writing. It has a smooth surface and is tear-resistant. Not only this, it is also waterproof, which makes it a great ally when you have to write outside or if your kids happen to play with it.

The notebooks are an excellent choice for a corporate gift, as every employee will be glad to receive a high-quality gift that is climate-positive. Check out for more corporate gift ideas for your employees.

Stone paper journal

Another fantastic product made from limestone is the stone paper journal. Just like with stone paper notebook production, not a single tree has to be cut to produce them. But also, much less water is used and there is no need for bleaching and using toxic chemicals. There is a reason we say that the sustainable future is written in stone, as only sustainable practices will protect and save our wonderful planet.

Stone paper journals are a spot-on gift to your loved ones for any holiday you can think of. Or, a gift to yourself that you will use to keep a journal daily. The journal is a great way to track your thoughts and find out where your strength lies, and what is the next step in your life. Protecting the planet is definitely our next step, feel free to join us by using eco-friendly products in your everyday life.

Stone paper packaging

Offering sustainable products is great, but it leaves a bitter-sweet taste when the sustainable product comes in plastic packaging that just ends up in the trash, polluting the environment, right? Our products come in stone paper boxes, or stone paper packaging, and can be recycled just like paper. This just shows that stone paper applications are plentiful. Every segment of production and sales must become sustainable so that true changes can occur.

Why are forests so important, anyway?

Forests are vital for a healthy life on our planet. They are home to around 80% of animals, plants, and fungi. Any excess deforestation directly impacts millions of animals and plants and causes disbalance in nature. Also, 1.6 billion people depend on forests for medicine, jobs, energy, and shelter. This calls for immediate action towards reforestation and restoration of landscape in all parts of the world.

Finally, forests are our biggest allies in fighting climate change. They store CO2 in leaves and branches and help cool the Earth from 2 to 8 degrees. Without the forests absorbing CO2 we don`t have much chance of preventing the inevitable climate change.

There are plenty of other reasons why forests are a vital part of our well-being, but climate change, natural habitat for animals all plants, and benefits for people are the most important ones.

Causes of deforestation

Now that we know why forests are so important to us, it is vital to learn about the causes of deforestation, and what we can do to prevent this. While to a certain extent, there are natural causes of deforestation, human causes have outnumbered them by far.

Our population is growing and the agricultural demands are growing as well. Forests often make room for farming and crop cultivation. Apart from this, many forests are taken down due to urbanization, to make room for buildings and roads.

The logging industry is one of the most significant factors of deforestation, especially improper tree cutting. The trees need to be cut in a way that allows for their regrowth. This is why it is essential to switch to products such as stone paper notebooks, that don`t require a single tree to be cut.

Unsustainable Logging Practices Contribute to Deforestation

Will conscious consumerism save the forests?

While cutting down trees cannot be completely avoided, we can certainly try. Planting trees, and using eco-friendly products from bamboo and limestone are a great way to help. Conscious consumerism will instruct product makers to make products without using toxic chemicals, trees, and other raw materials.

We have the power to dictate the product market. And we do this by choosing to buy sustainable, climate-positive products. Read the labels on the products before you buy them, ditch single-use products, limit the waste in your everyday life.

Our small actions will lead to a better future. Remember that we have an unseen bond with the trees. It is time to give them something in return for all their help.
