History of the International Day of Forests The idea of celebrating forests and raising awareness of their importance goes back to November 1971. During the Food and Agriculture Organization Conference, March 21st was elected World Forestry Day. But, it was not until November 28, 2012, that the United Nations General Assembly declared March 21st as the International Day of Forests. This date has been celebrated each year since 2013 through various campaigns with the sole aim of protecting rainforests throughout the world. Not only businesses and individuals but also countries are encouraged to organize campaigns on each level to promote forest health. The best way to celebrate the International Day of Forests is by planting a tree. How do we help? We know how important forests are for our planet, and we recognize the need to do everything to save them. Causes of deforestation Now that we know why forests are so important to us, it is vital to learn about the causes of deforestation, and what we can do to prevent this. While to a certain extent, there are natural causes of deforestation, human causes have outnumbered them by far. Our population is growing and the agricultural demands are growing as well. Forests often make room for farming and crop cultivation. Apart from this, many forests are taken down due to urbanization, to make room for buildings and roads. The logging industry is one of the most significant factors of deforestation, especially improper tree cutting. The trees need to be cut in a way that allows for their regrowth.
