About the owner
The owner is a Taiwanese entrepreneur and engineer who invented this environmentally friendly method of producing stone paper. His background was in plastics manufacturing but, concerned with the pollution caused by the manufacture of plastics, he wanted to explore new materials and ways of working. Thanks to his background in manufacturing and machinery, he was able to invent a completely this novel raw material and the required machinery to create a new kind of paper.
How we found it
We at A Good Company were familiar with the production technique, and were looking for a supplier with the same appreciation for detail as ourselves. Our sourcing team in Hong Kong located the factory, and we researched the company extensively before making contact.
Upon meeting the founder, we came to realise that we had found what we were looking for: a passionate, family-owned company with deep-rooted craftsmanship and a genuine commitment to sustainable product development.
The process and way of working
The Stone Paper Factory has spent two decades perfecting its own unique method to create a beautiful paper-like material from stone, in a dry process that uses no chemicals or water. In close collaboration with A Good Company, the factory produces our range of exquisite, high-quality notebooks, as well all of our packaging materials.
Making paper out of stone is a fascinating process, where leftovers from a neighbouring construction industry, mainly limestone and marble, is crushed into a fine powder called calcium carbonate. The factory only uses leftover residue and isn’t engaged in any mining activities to source its raw material. Calcium carbonate is a natural product and although not renewable is abundant and used in many industries, such as construction, traditional paper making, and in everyday products such as toothpaste, medicine and baby powder.
The calcium carbonate powder is mixed with recycled non-toxic high-density polyethene (HDPE) -- a material that can be recycled almost indefinitely -- to create small white pellets the size of candy. In a 100% dry process -- applying no acids, bleach or water -- the pellets are squeezed into a material that resembles traditional paper. This process is carbon neutral, generates no pollution, and only requires a small amount of power, which the Stone Paper Factory produces from its own solar panels.
More about stone paper
Making paper out of stone is a fascinating process. At A Good Company, we produce our Stone Paper in a lovely, family-owned factory in Taiwan, that has improved and refined its production processes for several years.
Our stone paper range
We sell a variety of stone paper products in our marketplace. We have pocket diaries, notebooks, sketch pads, and even bullet journals made from stone paper. Furthermore, our packaging is made from stone paper. We spent years on its development to ensure it’s both functional and sophisticated.
