Recycled Cotton

Recycled Cotton

06 Aug 2020

Fast fashion has led to a mountain of clothing being discarded each year, with devastating effects on the environment. At agood company, we recognize the urgent need to find new and innovative ways to reduce textile waste. That's why we've made it our mission to incorporate recycling into our production process, using materials like recycled cotton to create new and useful products. By turning our unwanted garments into something useful, we're able to reduce the impact of fast fashion on the environment and promote sustainability in the fashion industry. So let's explore why we use recycled cotton and how it helps us in our mission to provide stylish and high-quality t-shirts.

What is it?

Recycled cotton is a textile material that is made by converting cotton fabric scraps and waste into new cotton fibers that can be used to make new textile products. The process involves collecting and sorting cotton waste, breaking it down into small fibers, and then re-spinning them into new cotton yarns that can be used for fabrics. Recycled cotton is an eco-conscious alternative to traditional cotton because it reduces the amount of cotton waste that goes to landfills, and it requires less water and energy to produce than new cotton fibers. Additionally, using recycled cotton helps to reduce the need for new cotton cultivation, which can have environmental impacts from the use of pesticides and fertilizers.

At agood company we are not using any recycled cotton we are using THE recycled cotton certified by Global Recycled Standard. That means our cotton is so green, it's practically a plant! We source our cotton from post-consumer waste and give it new life as the perfect material for our agood t-shirts. Plus, as a B-Corp certfied company, you can rest easy knowing that the cotton we use meets the highest standards of sustainability and quality. So, not only do our agood t-shirts make a statement about your sense of style, but they also make a statement about your commitment to the environment. It's a win-win for you and the planet!

Why we like It

There are plenty of reasons why we're passionate about using recycled materials in our t-shirt production, especially when it comes to recycled cotton.

Only 1% of clothing gets recycled into new clothing, which is incredibly low compared to the 53 million tons of clothes produced each year, of which 87% gets landfilled or incinerated. In order to change the system, we need collaboration, we need companies to work together and look at different materials so that they can be recovered and fed back into the system. It has to be a conscious shift toward system change.

Dame Ellen Macarthur, in conversation with Clare Press

  • Using recycled cotton in our t-shirts helps divert waste from landfills and incinerators reducing the amount of waste that ends up in our environment. This is especially important when you consider that the textile industry is one of the largest polluters in the world.
  • Cotton is a notoriously thirsty crop, requiring significant amounts of water to grow, and traditional cotton production methods often involve the use of harmful synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. By using recycled cotton, we're reducing the amount of water and chemicals needed to produce our t-shirts, making our production process more eco-friendly
  • By using recycled cotton, we're promoting sustainable practices and responsible production methods.
  • Our commitment to using recycled materials helps support a more circular economy and reduce our environmental impact.

Applications

Recycled cotton isn't just for t-shirts and towels anymore! From hip homewear to chic personal care items, this material is everywhere. Let's explore the major applications of recycled cotton:

  • Recycled cotton can be used to create a wide range of textile products, including t-shirts, jeans, hoodies, and more.
  • It can also be used in home goods such as towels, blankets, and rugs.
  • Recycled cotton can be blended with other fibers, such as organic cotton or wool, to create fabrics with unique characteristics.
  • Personal care items, such as cotton swabs or rounds, can also be made from recycled cotton.
  • Recycled cotton can be used in sustainable fashion lines, making it a versatile material for a variety of applications.

Our approach involves:

  • NO chemicals: We don't use any harmful chemicals in the production of our t-shirts, ensuring that they're safe for both our customers and the environment.
  • NO water: Unlike traditional cotton production, which can be incredibly water-intensive, our process requires no water at all. This means we're able to conserve this precious resource and reduce our impact on water systems.
  • NO pesticides: By using recycled cotton, we're able to avoid the use of synthetic pesticides, which are harmful to both the environment and the people who come into contact with them.
  • NO synthetic fertilisers: Similarly, we don't use any synthetic fertilizers in our production process, which can contribute to soil degradation and water pollution.
  • YES recyclable: Our t-shirts are fully recyclable, meaning they can be repurposed into new products at the end of their lifecycle.
  • YES reusable: Thanks to the durability and high quality of our materials, our t-shirts are designed to be used and loved for years to come, upcycled, reducing the need for frequent replacements and further conserving resources.
