What is World Water Day?

World Water Day is a special occasion every year on March 22nd. It brings people from all over the world together to think about why water is so important. Water is a fundamental human right that should be available to all, and this day is a big reminder that everyone should preserve and manage water resources sustainably. Discussions often centre around Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure universal access to water and sanitation by 2030.

World Water Day holds a rich history that underscores its significance in global efforts to address water-related challenges. Initially proposed at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, World Water Day was formally designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. Since then, it has served as a platform for raising awareness about water issues and advocating for sustainable water management practices. Over the years, World Water Day has evolved into a global movement, engaging governments, organisations and individuals in concerted action to ensure access to clean and safe water for all.

Water Scarcity

This year's theme is 'Water for Peace,' emphasising how important water is for keeping the world peaceful and prosperous and how having clean water can help prevent conflicts and make communities get along better.

Understanding the global water crisis

Let's talk about why World Water Day is so important. Around the world, many places are dealing with not having enough water, water that's dirty, and not being able to get clean water to drink. This shows how important it is to do something about it right away.

Not enough water

Imagine not having enough water to drink or use for basic things like cooking and cleaning. That's the reality for millions of people. As the population grows and rainfall decreases, more and more places are running out of water because there's not enough of it to meet everyone's needs. According to the United Nations, over 2 billion people currently live in countries experiencing high water stress, with demand for water projected to exceed supply in the coming decades.

The struggle for clean water in marginalised communities

Sadly, not everyone is affected the same way by the water crisis. In lots of areas, it's tough to find clean water which means that the water problem affects them more than others. It's especially hard for people living in rural places, makeshift neighbourhoods, and marginalised populations - those who are often left out or treated unfairly. People, especially women and kids, have to walk long distances to find water that might still be dirty. They spend each day fetching water instead of pursuing education or livelihood opportunities. It's not fair that some people have to struggle so much just to get something as basic as water.

Water pollution and contamination

Even when there is water, it's often not safe to drink because it's polluted. Factories, farms, and cities dump waste into rivers and lakes, endangering human health and ecosystems. Access to clean and safe drinking water remains elusive for millions, leading to waterborne diseases and environmental degradation.

Who suffers the most?

When water is scarce or polluted, it's not just a nuisance – it's a serious problem. Dirty water can spread diseases like diarrhoea, which can be deadly, especially for kids. Also, when there's not enough water for farming, it means less food and fewer jobs, which makes life even harder for many families.

It's not just people who suffer when there's a water crisis. Animals and plants also need clean water to survive. But when rivers and lakes dry up or get too dirty, it's bad news for them too. Many animals lose their homes, and entire ecosystems can be damaged.

How agood company helps?

At agood company, we believe in taking action to help those who need it most. That’s why we’ve partnered with charity: water, an amazing organisation dedicated to bringing clean and safe water to people all over the world. Here's how we're helping.

Pens and pencils made with grass

Every time someone buys one of our pens or pencils made with natural grass, we don’t just sell a product – we also give back. For each purchase, we donate 100 litres of clean water to charity: water. That means every stroke of your pen helps someone in need get closer to having clean water to drink.

Our pens and pencils are made to last a long time. They're made with natural meadow grass, which makes them strong and eco-friendly. You can keep using them over and over again as they're refillable. They're designed with an ergonomic triangular grip, so they're comfortable to hold while you write. When you're done with them, you can send them back to us using our agood loop™ program, and we'll make another one. Our pens use non-SVHC ink that's safe, and our pencils can be refilled with small pencil leads.

Stone paper notebooks and journals

Imagine the stories waiting to be written in our notebooks and journals. Each purchase inspires creativity and also makes a positive impact. For every stone paper notebook or stone paper journal you buy from us, we donate 500 litres of clean water to charity: water. So, while you fill the pages with your thoughts and ideas, you’re also filling someone's life with hope and opportunity. Our notebooks are made from stone paper, a revolutionary alternative to traditional paper that minimises deforestation and water usage.

You can also find our stone paper notebooks available in packs, allowing you to buy in bulk and save, whether you're stocking up for yourself or buying gifts.

Thermal bottles made from recycled steel

Instead of contributing to the never-ending cycle of plastic waste, we use recycled steel to create durable and reusable bottles. These reusable thermal bottles help reduce the demand for new materials and also prevent countless plastic bottles from ending up in landfills or polluting our oceans. With every bottle sold, we donate 500 litres of clean water to charity: water, ensuring that every sip you take helps quench someone else’s thirst for a better tomorrow.

We have a big goal in mind: to provide 25 million litres of fresh water every year. It’s a huge challenge, but with your support, we know we can achieve it.

Final word

Access to clean water is not a privilege reserved for a select few. It's something everyone should have, like air to breathe or food to eat. It's a fundamental human right! Imagine not being able to turn on the tap and get water that won't make you sick. Well, that's the reality for too many people. Isn't that something we should all strive to change?

We all have a part to play in solving the water crisis. It's something we all need to work on. Governments need to invest in better water systems and protect clean water sources. Organisations and charities are tirelessly working to deliver clean water to communities in need, but they can't do it alone — they need our support. By lending a hand, we can make a significant difference in the lives of millions worldwide, ensuring that clean water is accessible to every person, everywhere. There's no time to waste! Nature can't bounce back overnight from the damage we've caused, so we must act now to preserve and protect our water resources for future generations.

In the episode "The World's Water Crisis" from "Explained," a Netflix original series that explains the big questions of today, you'll learn more about this urgent issue. It helps us understand the problem better, sparking discussions and raising awareness about why everyone deserves clean water. After all, understanding is the first step towards change.
