Where would you be without your trusty notebook? Phones and laptops are all well and good but sometimes you just need a break from a screen. It’s also been proven that the act of writing something down helps you to better understand and recall it later. Journaling is also used by many as a way to help deal with emotions and achieve goals.

The market for paper notebooks is expected to keep growing as we enter the ‘roaring twenties.’ But, stopping to pause for a second, most notebooks are made from trees. Trees should be kept in the ground where they can happily absorb carbon from the atmosphere and help us fight climate change. Also, the process of turning wood to paper is notoriously dirty.

That leaves two alternatives: use recycled paper from trees that have already been cut down, or use a more sustainable alternative such as stone paper.

Here are our favourite sustainable notebooks so you can write with minimal, even positive, impact.

A Good Notebook

We’re avid notebook users and use them every day. But we’re not fans of the traditional paper industry and the environmental footprint of regular notebooks. That is why for our range of notebooks and journals we opted for stone paper instead. Leftover stone from local industries is collected and transformed into paper in a process that uses no water or chemicals and runs on renewable energy.

Further, stone paper is a dream to write, or draw, on! There’s no grain direction so the experience is silky smooth. It’s also waterproof, tear-resistant and wrinkle-free. We also offset all carbon emissions so that each notebook is actually carbon negative.

Greenfield Paper Company Hemp Journal

The Greenfield Paper Company are all about tree-free paper. Instead of trees, they use post-consumer recycled paper combined with hemp—a crop that’s been grown sustainably for thousands of years. Their process of turning it into paper uses no bleaches or dyes. Further, they operate a zero-waste facility, re-pulp all of their paper cuttings or use them for packing materials, donate usable scrap paper to local schools and organizations and recycle all excess custom printed materials that they produce.

Poopoo paper

Yes this is what it sounds like. As another alternative to wood-pulp paper, PooPooPaper collects the manure from elephants, horses, donkeys, cows and buffalo, boils it in water to remove all non-fibre materials, mixed with other non-wood plant fibres such as corn stalks, pineapple husks, hay, banana tree trunks, and mulberry bark, and then processes into paper. No chemical and no trees. They also donate a portion of profits to conservation work and animal reserves worldwide.
